Farriery course

In this course, we learn the basics of shoeing and the anatomy of the horse's hoof. As well, to learn to recognize horse perpendiculars and defects. Also, understanding when and when not to shoe a horse with respect to its anatomy and the safety of an emergency shoeing, The course is dedicated to owners, breeders, operators and everyone who understand that a good part of horse’s health and wellness depends on the specific care of its hooves.

Apprentice to the Farriery

Much of horse’s health and welfare depends on proper care of its hooves. Foot shod or barefoot? Which are the implications of shoeing and what does the barefoot‘s choice mean? How much are the terrain and the horse’s future activity important in this choice? How to choose the type of shoeing? Shoeing, if needed for certain activities and some kind of ground, it has to be well done: how to recognize? 
This course has the aim to clarify various aspects, giving fundamental knowledge through a lot of practice, to deal with from time to time the right choice.

Didactic Method

The course provides each meeting composed of exercises and practical demonstrations supported by lectures, allowing participants‘ direct experience, to make learning easier and more profitable. 
At the end of the course, a certificate of participation will be issued.

Teacher

The course will be held by Fabio Tascone, farrier, instructor of the Flying Anvil Foundation, riding instructor, he has in his past a wide variety of experiences in different contexts, for both kinds of jobs and horse management. 
As a farrier, he works in horse trekking, hiking, and mainly endurance, polo, shoeing for the Palio of Siena, he also takes care of the trimming of foals, and mares in several farms. 
The skills acquired during his lifetime with horses have always aimed for animal welfare and fort hat reason Fabio founded his own experience on a „ healthy use“ of the horse through the observation of their behavior and profound knowledge of the relationship man/horse. 
The direct experience with a large number of horses, allowed him to deepen and to perfect a method of training and Equestrian education with very clear objectives: give the horses and riders technique and communication tools in order to make the combination as independent as possible in relation to difficulties encountered in horse-riding as well as in the relationship itself.

Objective:

At the end of the course, participants will know perpendicularity and defects, communicating with the horse to get the foot, choose whether to shoe or hold barefoot horse and to face in autonomy a remittance or an emergency shoeing. The lessons will explain the main knowledge of farriery: the anatomy of the foot, the knowledge of barefoot, natural balance, traditional farriery, maintenance of barefoot horses, the maintenance of the horse shod…

The trainees will have from this experience the tools to go towards autonomy and to carry on positive experiences with an for their own horses.

Course topics:
  • Anatomy of horse foot, as it is made, and how it works, the verticals, defects and the importance of equilibrium;
  • The basics of farriery in order to understand whether or not shoeing your horse which is the best kind of shoes, what to ask to the farrier and how often to call him;
  • How to get the horse’s foot and how to teach to own horses to give feet;
  • How to help the farrier in his work and how to communicate to him;
  • To let veterinarian and farrier for diagnosis, solutions, and corrective shoeing;
  • How to make a remittance or an emergency shoeing, during a walk or without a farrier;
  • Maintenance of barefoot and shoed horses;
  • A lot of practice with horses.
Duration:

24 hours of classes between theory and practice (about 6 hours a day)

Objective:Class schedule:

9.00-12.30 a.m. and 3.30-6.00 p.m.
