Riding & Swimming Trail

This trail combines history with fun. We explore the ancient paths of the Etruscans, the early inhabitants of Italy - long before the age of the Roman empire, but also enjoy an unforgettable swim with the horses.

From Cornacchino to the Fiora river, along the Etruscan roads. We leave the Fiora valley and reach Saturnia, we follow the Stellata which is the river of thermal waters that comes from the famous waterfalls, we reach the confluence with the Albegna river. In this river there will be a day dedicated to swimming with horses. The route in the saddle will be aimed at reaching the appropriate place along the river. We continue the journey: we leave the field on the river going up the course to the Etruscan Necropolis of Puntone, Catabbio and we return to Cornacchino.

Sunday we spend the whole day on horseback, with a picnic, and return to Cornacchino. This first day is very important, it is a matter of "creating the group", of checking the combinations between the rider and the horse, explaining our travel equipment, our way and our rules of behavior in traveling on horseback.
In the 5 days of travel, the day normally involves a long morning and a shorter afternoon, for a total of between five and six hours a day.

Number of participants:

min. 3, max. 10

Main gaits:

walk, trot and canter where possible.

Difficulty:

medium

Riding Experience:

Safe rider

Main difficulties:

some mountain roads and some passages in the rivers seem very challenging but just let the horses do, they know how to deal with this type of difficulty.

Main gaits:

walk, trot and canter where possible.

Altitude:

Maximum. 860 m. minimum 250 m. above sea level

Landscape:

Various and suggestive: mountain pastures of Cornacchino, the wild valley of the river Fiora, Etruscan Necropolis and “vie cave”. We ride predominantly on mountain paths, ancient Etruscan roads cut deep into the tuff rock, country roads and dirt roads

Terrain:

Predominantly mountain paths, country roads and dirt roads.

The Guides:

One experienced guide rides with the group while an other travels with an assistant and takes the luggage to the overnight site, preparing the camp and fencing for the horses

Our Horses:

All the horses are trained in Western riding and particularly suitable for trails.

The Stages:

Each stage lasts about 5 - 6 hours shared between the morning (longer ride) and the afternoon

Il fuoristrada:

ci permette di spostarci in ogni luogo adatto per il campo senza vincoli di buona viabilità ed è sempre pronto a risolvere eventuali problemi.

The Camp:

Is moved by the jeep and two assistants to the next campsite. It carries our luggage, the kitchen camp and a large tent for breakfast and dinner, a tent for changing clothes, a water supply for personal hygiene, an electric fence for the horse pasture, and igloo tents for two persons provided with comfortable mattresses.

The Picnic:

Is prepared in the morning and travels in the saddlebags.

Overnight:

We sleep in igloo tents fit for two, with your sleeping bag and our mattresses.

Riding gear:

Your riding gear should be comfortable and most importantly, should not be brand new (especially footwear), since new gear often holds unpleasant surprises. The footwear should be comfortable not only for riding, but also for walking, with a hard sole that permits a good contact between foot and stirrup. Footwear with a slick sole and very tight clothing should be avoided. The trousers should be comfortable and robust. You may also need a raincoat , a hat for protection, a portable light, a small knife, swimwear, and a sleeping bag; you should bring along a light jumper for the evening. The belongings together should not be too bulky since there is limited space on the transport vehicle and in the saddlebags. Please avoid suitcases with a hard surface.

Medicines:

Your guide can provide basic medication and will take along a first-aid kit on the trek. Any health conditions that require special medication should be brought to the attention of the guide before departure on the trek. Allergy sufferers should bring their own medicines, as those who suffer allergies from common medications.
